On February 4, 2025, a notable event unfolded during the 11th Sitting of the 1st Meeting of the 1st Session of the 9th Parliament of Ghana. The session, which aimed to address key government issues and finalize ministerial nominations, turned chaotic. Members of Parliament (MPs) struggled to maintain decorum, leading to a moment of frustration for the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah Amoako.
As the meeting progressed, MP Dominic Nitiwul took the floor to make his points. However, his voice was drowned out by constant disruptions from fellow lawmakers. Despite repeated calls for order from Speaker Amoako, the noise continued unabated. His efforts to regain control of the session proved futile, and the tension in the room escalated.
In a candid moment captured on video, Amoako, seemingly unaware that his microphone was still on, expressed his exasperation by saying, “I’m tired.” His frustration resonated with many who have witnessed similar situations in Parliament. The pressures of maintaining order in a heated environment were evident on his face as he gestured to emphasize his point.
As Nitiwul continued his submission, the Second Deputy Speaker’s patience wore thin. He exclaimed, “Me ntie,” which translates to “I won’t listen,” clearly indicating that he had reached his limit. “I’m not going to take any more,” he insisted, reinforcing the need for respect and order during the proceedings.
Amoako also addressed the Majority caucus directly, cautioning them against using their microphones unnecessarily. He pointed out that this tactic was often employed to interrupt others, disrupting the flow of important discussions. “Honorable members, when I say this you get flared up,” he remarked, urging the MPs to focus on the business at hand.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced in Parliament, where the voices of elected officials sometimes struggle to be heard above the noise of discord. As the session continued, the frustration of the Second Deputy Speaker served as a reminder of the importance of civility and respect in political discourse.
