68th Independence Day celebration
On March 6, 2025, Ghana celebrated its 68th Independence Day, marking nearly seven decades since it broke free from colonial rule. This day holds significant historical importance as Ghana was the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence in 1957. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the leader of the independence movement, played a pivotal role in negotiating with the British colonial government and ultimately declared independence on this very day.
This year’s celebrations was notably different from those of previous years. Traditionally, the festivities took place at the iconic Black Star Square and in regional capitals, featuring grand ceremonies filled with parades and performances. However, the government has opted for a more modest approach this time to manage costs effectively. Despite this shift, the spirit of celebration remains strong among Ghanaians.
The main events for the day included a parade at the Jubilee House, where the President addressed the nation. This address served to inspire unity and reflect on the progress made since independence, as well as the challenges that still lie ahead.
As Ghanaians gathered to commemorate this important day, they celebrated not just their history, but also their resilience and commitment to building a brighter future. The 68th Independence Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for freedom and the ongoing journey toward national development.
