Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has expressed deep concern over the growing political tensions that are impacting Ghana’s parliament.
During his candid interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning program, Afenyo-Markin discussed his interactions with Speaker Alban Bagbin. He highlighted concerns about unfulfilled commitments and escalating political disputes, while maintaining a diplomatic tone.
“The current political stalemate isn’t benefiting anyone,” Afenyo-Markin stated. “During special quorum issues recently, the Speaker made statements that have strained our working relationship, though I won’t go into specifics.”
He recalled a significant interaction with Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Asamoah about procedural matters, leading to concerns that Parliament might face operational challenges. According to Afenyo-Markin, his approach to Bagbin for resolution was met with an unexpected response.
“When I sought clarification, the Speaker assured me there would be no procedural bottlenecks,” Afenyo-Markin noted, emphasizing the need to maintain parliamentary functions despite the tensions.
However, Afenyo-Markin was ultimately disappointed when Bagbin’s position seemed to shift. Despite his role as a respected member of the Speaker’s advisory team, Afenyo-Markin expressed his honest views about the situation – he recognized the stakes and implications involved.
Determined to find resolution, Afenyo-Markin suggested exploring legal options through the Supreme Court, noting that a court ruling could help clarify matters between the two sides. “If I let go, the NDC would only escalate their demands,” he explained.
He mentioned that while Bagbin may not have been aware of his intent to seek legal interpretation, the Speaker appeared unmoved in maintaining his stance.
