In a lively session in Parliament on January 3, 2025, an NDC Member of Parliament, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, made headlines when he quoted a Bible verse during President Nana Akufo-Addo’s final State of the Nation Address (SONA). The atmosphere was filled with laughter as Kofi Buah made his remarks, which were both humorous and pointed.
As the Deputy Minority Leader, Kofi Buah took the opportunity to address the President directly. He highlighted that President Akufo-Addo’s address notably missed a promise he had made regarding the construction of a National Cathedral. This comment elicited laughter and cheers from fellow MPs, including a wry smile from the President himself.
Kofi Buah humorously remarked on the President’s economic management, referring to how Akufo-Addo was “cushioned by the IMF” at both the beginning and the end of his term. He said, “Mr. President, you left something very important in your account which is an account of your promise to God to build him a cathedral.” His lighthearted jab set a playful tone, but his deeper message about governance was clear.
He then assured the people of Ghana that the upcoming NDC administration under John Dramani Mahama would bring a new dawn of hope and better leadership. He emphasized that the current government’s tenure would serve as a lesson on how not to govern the country.
To wrap up his speech, Kofi Buah quoted Exodus 14:13, saying, “Fear not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord.” He drew a parallel between the biblical story of the Israelites’ liberation from Egypt and the current political climate in Ghana, suggesting that a change was imminent. His closing words, “Bye bye Mr. President, it is finished,” resonated with many, marking a significant moment in the session.
