Former President John Dramani Mahama recently shared a lighthearted moment during his campaign visit to Yilo Krobo Constituency, addressing several instances where New Patriotic Party (NPP) leaders accidentally endorsed him instead of their own candidate.
During his speech, Mahama humorously suggested that NPP leaders keep mentioning his name because they “dream about him.” He pointed out three notable slip-ups that have occurred during the campaign season:
- President Akufo-Addo mistakenly referred to an “Akufo-Addo/Mahama administration”
- NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Chairman Wontumi, accidentally told people to vote for John Mahama
- Most recently, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the NPP’s vice presidential candidate, mistakenly endorsed Mahama before being corrected to say “Bawumia”
Mahama particularly highlighted the recent incident involving NAPO, describing how even after being corrected once, NAPO repeated “vote for Mahama” before finally being prompted to say “Bawumia, Bawumia.”
These verbal slip-ups have become talking points in Ghana’s political discourse as the country approaches its next election. Mahama, who is the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, used these incidents to engage with his supporters and add some humor to his campaign message.
