following the December 7, 2024, presidential elections, John Dramani Mahama has officially communicated his victory to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. This announcement was made through a delegation led by Hon. Samuel Sarpong, a former Ashanti Regional Minister, at the Manhyia Palace.
The elections concluded with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) conceding defeat to Mahama, the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), even before the Electoral Commission had officially declared the results. Bawumia’s concession, made during a press conference on December 8, was aimed at fostering peace and reducing tensions in the country.
Prior to the elections, Mahama had visited the Asantehene on December 3, where he sought blessings and support for his campaign. During that meeting, he expressed his commitment to the development of the Ashanti region, emphasizing its importance as Ghana’s second-largest city. Mahama assured the Asantehene that he would prioritize the completion of various stalled projects, including the Afari Military Hospital and the second phase of the Kejetia market.
“I consider Manhyia my home, and I will ensure that I complete all projects that have been abandoned,” Mahama stated, reaffirming his dedication to equitable development across the region. He also acknowledged the Asantehene’s previous advice to communicate his accomplishments while in office, which he plans to highlight as he embarks on his new term.
