Professor Kingsley Nyarko
Professor Kingsley Nyarko, the Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, has recently urged President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider his decision regarding the dismissal of individuals employed in public service by the previous administration. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi, Nyarko expressed his concerns about the impact of these dismissals on employment in the country.
Nyarko described the president’s actions, communicated through Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, as troubling and unfortunate. He reminded the president of his campaign promises to create jobs, particularly for the youth, rather than dismiss them. “Throughout the electioneering campaign, President Mahama promised to create jobs for the citizenry, especially the youth, but not dismissals,” he emphasized.
The MP highlighted the significant efforts made by the previous Nana Addo-Bawumia administration to combat unemployment. He pointed out that between January 2009 and January 2017, job creation was minimal, leading to the formation of the Unemployed Graduate Association of Ghana. In contrast, from January 2017 to January 2025, various initiatives were introduced to generate employment opportunities. Programs such as NABCO, the creation of new districts and regions, and the implementation of the “One District, One Factory” policy were all aimed at addressing unemployment.
Nyarko acknowledged that while more work is needed to create jobs for those still seeking employment, it is unconscionable for the Mahama administration to terminate the jobs of individuals who were legitimately employed. He appealed to the president to reverse his decision, stop the dismissals, and allow these individuals to return to work.
