John Dumelo
John Dumelo, the MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon, in a discussion expressed his views on the use of sirens by lawmakers. Responding to comments made by fellow MP Kwame Obeng Asare, popularly known as A Plus, Dumelo made it clear that he does not believe sirens are necessary for his parliamentary duties.
Dumelo acknowledged that some MPs support the idea of using sirens to facilitate their transportation. However, he personally disagrees with this viewpoint. In a video shared on social media, he stated, “I don’t think I need a siren.” He emphasized that while sirens might make travel easier for some, they are not essential for him.
This debate is not new. The topic of allowing government officials, including MPs, to use sirens has sparked public discourse in the past. A previous attempt to pass a law permitting this use faced significant criticism from the public and ultimately did not succeed. Dumelo’s stance adds another layer to this ongoing conversation about privilege and accountability among lawmakers.
As a newly elected MP under the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dumelo’s perspective echoes with many Ghanaians who are wary of the privileges often associated with political office. He seems to suggest that an MP’s role should focus on serving the constituents rather than seeking special treatment.
