The Ghana Education Service (GES) has suspended Rev. Joy Kafui Akpebu, the headmaster of Tsito Secondary Technical School, along with two other staff members. This action comes amid serious allegations involving the diversion of over 100 cartons of tinned tomatoes, which were meant to provide meals for students.
The decision to interdict the headmaster, a storekeeper named Sylvanus Awunyo, and driver Samuel Kwame Ampeh is rooted in concerns about their potential interference with an ongoing investigation. GES announced the suspensions on January 18, 2025, emphasizing that this measure aligns with their Code of Conduct, which allows for such actions in cases of misconduct.
The controversy began when a citizen vigilante, Apostle Frank Gogo Ekatso, reported suspicious activity involving a taxi driver. In a viral video, Ekatso confronted the driver of an Opel Astra taxi as he attempted to load the cartons of tomatoes into his car. The driver was allegedly seen transferring items from a bus associated with Tsito Secondary Technical School. This bus is believed to have collected food supplies from a distribution center meant for several schools in the Ho Municipality.
Apostle Ekatso’s vigilant actions led to the driver’s arrest, and he has since been handed over to the police, where he is currently assisting with the investigation. The situation has raised questions about the management of resources intended for the Free Senior High School (SHS) program, which aims to provide quality education and meals for students.
The interdiction of the Tsito SECTECH staff underscores the importance of accountability in educational institutions. As the investigation unfolds, many are watching closely to see how the GES will address this serious issue. Ensuring that resources meant for students are used appropriately is crucial for maintaining trust in the Free SHS initiative.
