Lawyer Martin Kpebu has called for urgent changes at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). He believes that competent and honest leadership is key to turning the company around. Kpebu spoke during an interview on TV3’s The Keypoints on January 11, 2025. He addressed the ongoing issues in the power distribution sector.
Kpebu expressed concern about how contracts are awarded at ECG. He mentioned the controversial HUBTEL contract, suggesting it was more about profit than improving the service. “Decisions should benefit the people, not just enrich a few,” he stated. He emphasized that such contracts have led to inefficiencies within the company.
To improve ECG, Kpebu urged for a transparent process in appointing its leadership. He argued that the focus should be on selecting leaders who are selfless and honest. “We need the most competent Ghanaian to run ECG,” he said. He stressed that leadership should not favor family or friends, but prioritize the public good.
Kpebu also touched on the topic of privatization. He cautioned against rushing into privatizing ECG without careful evaluation. “It’s important to weigh the implications of privatization,” he warned. He believes the main issue is not just who manages ECG, but whether they act in the public interest.
He encouraged citizens to engage in discussions about reforms. Kpebu believes that ongoing conversations can lead to meaningful change over time. “Let’s keep talking. Changes may not happen overnight, but persistence can yield results,” he concluded.
