A serious incident unfolded in Konongo Odumase, located in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, when shops dealing in mining explosives exploded, injuring several individuals. The chaos erupted on March 6, 2025, and the exact cause of the explosion remains unclear.
Witnesses reported hearing loud blasts, which sent residents running for safety. Videos shared on social media captured the terrifying moments as people fled the scene amidst the sounds of explosions. The situation escalated further when local residents confronted personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, reportedly throwing stones and forcing them to withdraw.
While the number of injuries is still being assessed, the community is on high alert. The blast has raised concerns about safety protocols surrounding the storage and handling of explosives, especially in populated areas. This incident echoes a previous tragedy in January 2022, when a truck carrying explosives exploded in the Appiatse community near Bogoso, resulting in significant casualties and widespread destruction.
In that earlier incident, 17 people lost their lives, and nearly 60 others were injured. Over 3,300 individuals were affected, and about 500 buildings were destroyed. The government responded by facilitating the reconstruction of housing for those displaced.
