On December 9, 2024, the Electoral Commission of Ghana officially announced the results of the presidential elections held two days earlier. The announcement came during a highly anticipated livestream event led by Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, who confirmed that the commission had received results from twelve regions.
Before the official results were declared, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), conceded defeat, congratulating former President John Dramani Mahama on his victory. Bawumia stated that internal assessments indicated Mahama had won the presidential election decisively, and he acknowledged the NDC’s success in the parliamentary races as well.
In his concession speech, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of peace and unity in Ghana, stating, “The people of Ghana have spoken. They have voted for change at this time, and we respect that decision with all humility.” He expressed gratitude for the support he received and highlighted the need for the nation to prioritize its democratic values and peaceful character.
John Mahama welcomed Bawumia’s gesture, noting that they had communicated over the phone following the concession. This exchange reflects a commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the country during this transition period.
