Chairman Wountumi with Messi and Ronaldo
In a bold declaration, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has shared his ambitious plan to attract some of the world’s biggest football stars to Ghana. The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) expressed his desire to see renowned players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr., and Vinicius Jr. retire at Asante Kotoko, one of Ghana’s most prestigious football clubs.
Speaking on Wontumi TV, Chairman Wontumi outlined his vision for elevating Ghanaian football on the global stage. He believes that bringing these high-profile athletes to Kotoko would not only enhance the club’s reputation but also inspire a new generation of football fans in the country. “As Kotoko chairman, I will do a lot for the club,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to the team and its supporters.
Wontumi’s plan is ambitious, but he is determined to make it happen. He aims to pay these stars to retire in Ghana, allowing fans to witness their final moments on the pitch. This initiative, he argues, would give Asante Kotoko a significant boost and even benefit their rival, Hearts of Oak. The prospect of such legendary players gracing the Ghanaian league is undoubtedly exciting for local football enthusiasts.
However, the announcement comes amid controversy surrounding the club. Recently, a Kotoko fan named Francis Yaw Frimpong, also known as Pooley, was tragically stabbed during a match against Nsoatreman on February 2, 2025. The incident has raised concerns about safety at football events. In response, the Ghana Police Service has arrested six individuals believed to be involved in the violence.
While Wontumi’s aspirations for Kotoko are commendable, they are set against a backdrop of pressing issues within the club. The safety of fans and the atmosphere at games must be prioritized. Nonetheless, the chairman’s enthusiasm could inspire hope and excitement among supporters.
