Ghanaian reggae musician and radio presenter Blakk Rasta has made a passionate plea for the use of Pidgin English in Parliament. In a recent interview with Joy FM, he argued that incorporating Pidgin into parliamentary discussions would make it easier for the general public to understand political proceedings.
Blakk Rasta expressed his appreciation for parliamentarians like A Plus and Baba Sadiq, who have already embraced Pidgin in their speeches. He stated, “The big English is too much,” emphasizing that complex language often alienates citizens from important discussions. By using Pidgin, he believes Parliament could become more relatable and inclusive, encouraging broader public participation.
He criticized the current political atmosphere, likening parliamentary debates to “bourgeoisies drinking tea,” which leaves many citizens out of the conversation. “When they discuss issues in Parliament, we wait for the media to break it down for us,” he lamented.
Additionally, Blakk Rasta shared his intentions to leave Ghana if the election results did not favor change, highlighting his frustrations with the current government’s handling of the economy. He has already traveled abroad to explore opportunities for a fresh start.
