JM and Bawumia
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President of Ghana, has expressed deep concern over the current state of insecurity in the country. In a recent Facebook post, he sharply criticized President John Dramani Mahama’s administration for what he sees as a troubling atmosphere reminiscent of a military takeover rather than a peaceful democratic transition.
Bawumia, who is the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the upcoming 2024 elections, reflected on his own decision to concede early in the last election to maintain peace. However, he noted that the situation has since deteriorated. He highlighted various attacks on journalists and the alarming use of military forces to raid the homes of former government officials.
In his post, Bawumia stated, “There is a general atmosphere of insecurity with attacks on journalists, the use of our military to raid the homes of former government officials, as well as mobs attacking innocent individuals and state institutions.” His words underline a growing frustration among citizens about the erosion of democratic values.
He urged President Mahama to act swiftly to protect institutions and uphold democratic practices. “These are certainly worrying times for our democracy,” he wrote. Bawumia emphasized that Ghanaians had hoped for a new era of governance that would move away from the ills of the past. He called for a commitment to advancing democracy and protecting state institutions.
Additionally, Bawumia condemned the dismissals of public workers appointed by former President Nana Akufo-Addo. He insisted that the current administration must be inclusive and work for all Ghanaians. He stated, “Ghana can do better. Ghana must do better!”
His comments come in the wake of disturbing reports, including an incident where individuals in military uniforms stormed the residence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta. This raid, which took place while Ofori-Atta was out of the country, has raised serious questions about the motives behind such actions.
