Haruna Iddrisu
The Ghanaian education system is set for an exciting change. The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, recently announced that Senior High School (SHS) students in Form Two will soon have the option to learn one major foreign language. This initiative aims to better prepare students for a globalized world where communication in multiple languages is increasingly important.
During an event in Accra on April 24, 2025, he emphasized the significance of this curriculum update. Students will be able to choose from languages such as French, Spanish, German, Chinese, or another compulsory language. This change is part of a broader review of the Senior High School curriculum, designed to equip students with essential skills for their futures.
He stated that this initiative aligns with President John Mahama’s vision. He believes that providing students with the opportunity to learn a foreign language will complement their studies and enhance their communication skills. The minister remarked, “From Senior High School Form Two, every Ghanaian student will have the option to choose one major foreign language.”
In addition to this language initiative, the Minister also inaugurated a steering committee on April 17, 2025, to review the entire curriculum from Kindergarten to Basic Six. This committee is composed of experienced educators and is chaired by Professor Amina Plummer. Their goal is to ensure the curriculum meets the current and future needs of students.
He highlighted the importance of education in shaping the country’s future. He remarked, “If we get it right in education, we will get it right as a country.” The committee’s work is not just a routine update but a crucial step toward preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly changing world.
The decision to introduce a foreign language requirement is a forward-thinking move. It acknowledges the interconnectedness of today’s global economy and the importance of effective communication. By learning a foreign language, students will enhance their employability and cultural understanding.
