President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Dr. Johnson Asiamah as the new Governor of the Bank of Ghana. This nomination is pending approval from the Council of State and follows the current Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison’s request to proceed on terminal leave before his retirement on March 28, 2025.
Dr. Ernest Addison has served as the Governor since April 2017. He completed two full terms, having been reappointed in March 2021. His tenure has seen various economic challenges, and his leadership has been a topic of much discussion in Ghana’s banking sector.
Dr. Johnson Asiamah comes into the role with a wealth of experience. He previously served as the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana from 2016 to 2017 and has over 23 years of experience at the Central Bank. His extensive background includes expertise in monetary policy formulation, financial stability regulation, and economic research.
Holding a PhD in Economics from the University of Southampton in the UK, Dr. Asiamah is well-equipped to lead the apex bank. A statement from the acting Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, highlighted Dr. Asiamah’s commitment to implementing sound monetary policies and fostering a stable financial system. His proven track record in promoting economic growth in Ghana adds to the confidence in his nomination.
As Ghana prepares for this leadership transition, many are hopeful that Dr. Asiamah will build on the foundation laid by Dr. Addison. The upcoming months will be crucial as he navigates the responsibilities of the role and addresses the challenges facing the nation’s economy.
