John Jinapor
On January 24, 2025, John Abdulai Jinapor, Ghana’s Minister of Energy and Green Transition, addressed concerns regarding the future of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). During a press conference, he made it clear that the government has no intention of selling the company. Instead, plans are underway to transition ECG to private sector management, but this process will involve careful planning and stakeholder consultation.
Jinapor emphasized the importance of transparency and local participation in this transition. He stated, “Let me assure the nation that we have not decided to sell ECG.” His commitment to involving local businesses reflects the government’s dedication to fostering homegrown solutions in the energy sector.
The Minister announced the formation of a seven-member technical committee tasked with developing a roadmap for this transition within a month. This group will consult various stakeholders, including workers, unions, and consumers, to ensure their voices are heard in the process. Jinapor stated, “We want this to be done in a transparent, effective, and responsible way.”
The urgency of this plan comes as the energy sector faces significant challenges. Jinapor warned that without timely action, the sector could face collapse. He urged the committee to prioritize local content participation, showcasing the government’s commitment to supporting local business ownership.
Chaired by Jabesh Amissah-Arthur, the committee comprises energy experts and key stakeholders. Their goal is to outline strategies that improve the efficiency and service delivery of ECG while maintaining the company’s operational integrity.
