Dafeamekpor's walkout on appointments' committee
On January 24, 2025, tensions flared during the vetting of Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, the Minister of Interior-designate. Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, abruptly walked out of the session due to a heated exchange with Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin.
The incident began when Afenyo-Markin claimed that all National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs received police recruitment allocations through protocol. Dafeamekpor took issue with this assertion, feeling it misrepresented the situation. He wanted to clarify that he did not receive any such recruitment opportunity. However, when he attempted to speak, Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, denied him the floor, leading to further frustration.
Dafeamekpor insisted that the claim must be addressed. He asserted, “With all due respect, the ranking member has just said that between 2017 and 2024 every NDC member got protocol, I never got.” His desire to clarify the matter reflected a commitment to transparency and honesty.
Despite Ahiafor’s attempts to redirect the discussion, Dafeamekpor felt unheard and chose to leave the vetting room. As he walked out, Ahiafor attempted to clarify that Afenyo-Markin had not stated that every NDC MP received protocol recruitment. He explained that while MPs often advocate for constituents seeking enlistment, there is no guarantee of success.
