Ghana’s poultry industry is facing a critical situation, and immediate reforms are necessary, according to Eric Opoku, the Minister-Designate of Food and Agriculture. During his recent vetting, Opoku highlighted the pressing issues that threaten the sector’s sustainability and the nation’s food security.
The poultry industry is currently grappling with a significant imbalance between supply and demand. This discrepancy poses a risk not only to poultry farmers but also to consumers who rely on affordable chicken products. In light of these challenges, Opoku has laid out a comprehensive plan to revitalize the sector, emphasizing that it will be a top priority under his leadership.
One of the key initiatives is the “Poultry Farm to the Table Programme.” This program aims to forge partnerships with poultry farmers’ associations and provide them with the necessary financial support to expand their operations. By doing so, the initiative seeks to increase production and better meet the growing demand for poultry products.
Opoku also pointed out that the high cost of poultry feed is a significant barrier to growth in the industry. To alleviate this problem, he pledged to prioritize the production of affordable chicken feed. By reducing feed costs, farmers will find it easier to operate sustainably and remain competitive in the market.
