The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has claimed victory in the Assin Central parliamentary seat, previously held by the controversial Kennedy Ohene Agyapong. The NDC candidate, Megyimah Shaibu Nurein, garnered 16,343 votes, accounting for 50.37% of the valid votes cast, while his opponent from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nti Godfred Amewu, received 15,926 votes, or 49.35%.
This victory marks a historic moment for the NDC, as it is the first time in 24 years that the party has won the Assin Central seat. The results reflect a significant shift in voter sentiment in the constituency, which has been a stronghold for Agyapong and the NPP.
As the Electoral Commission continues to announce results from polling stations nationwide, both major parties are urging their supporters to remain calm and patient during the collation process. The NPP has called for decorum among its members while monitoring the results, while the NDC encourages vigilance but cautions against premature celebrations.
The 2024 elections saw participation from 13 presidential candidates and over 800 parliamentary candidates across the country, showcasing the vibrant democratic engagement of Ghanaians.
As the political landscape shifts, the NDC’s win in Assin Central could signal new dynamics in the upcoming parliamentary sessions, impacting future governance and policy-making in Ghana.
