The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament have formally opposed the recent request to recall Parliament made by their New Patriotic Party (NPP) counterparts. In a memo dated November 25, NDC Parliamentary Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson urged Speaker Alban Bagbin to reject the NPP’s petition for an immediate parliamentary recall.
The NDC caucus argues that the recall request fails to meet the constitutional requirements outlined in Article 112(3) and Standing Order 53(1). They maintain that with just eleven days remaining before the 2024 general election, there is no emergency or urgent government business warranting Parliament’s reconvening.
This development comes in response to the NPP MPs’ November 21 petition, which sought Parliament’s immediate recall to address what they termed “high priority” government business. The NDC MPs, referring to themselves as the “NDC Majority Caucus,” emphasize that the Speaker is not obligated to honor the recall request since it lacks sufficient justification for urgency.
The opposition’s stance highlights growing tensions between the two major political parties as Ghana approaches its crucial 2024 elections, with both sides positioning themselves over parliamentary procedures and national priorities.
